An injury on an offshore platform does not automatically mean that the Jones Act applies. Fixed platforms and vessel-based operations can fall under different legal frameworks, and workers frequently move between them. Determining the worker's status and the nature of the structure is therefore an early priority.

Platform accidents may involve falls, cranes, dropped objects, pressure releases, explosions, defective equipment, chemical exposure, helicopter or vessel transfers, unsafe scaffolding, and contractor coordination failures. Because multiple companies often operate at the same location, identifying who controlled the work can be as important as identifying the immediate cause.

For some workers on the Outer Continental Shelf, the Longshore Act may apply through the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. Other workers may have Jones Act rights because of a substantial connection to a vessel or fleet. State law, federal maritime law, contract provisions, and third-party negligence claims may also become relevant depending on the facts.

Evidence can be distributed among several companies. Work permits, master service agreements, contractor safety manuals, inspection records, daily reports, job-safety analyses, training records, incident investigations, video, and electronic data may each be held by a different entity.

A prompt investigation helps prevent the case from being defined solely by the operator's internal incident report. The objective is to determine what actually happened, who controlled the dangerous condition or activity, and which legal remedies are available.
